Day Care Appeal
Hoylake Cottage is a unique centre which serves all of Wirral, offering 24 hour nursing, respite and day care for older people and those with dementia.
Day care clients enjoy good company, a hot meal, refreshments and activities, while door to door transport is also provided.
The day care service is currently run from the 100 year old former hospital building and in order to meet the increasing demand we need a new centre to continue to provide this service and offer additional services.
Planning permission has been secured for a new building which will provide treatment rooms for chiropody, physiotherapy and hairdressing; a bathing service for those who can’t bathe at home; a sensory garden to sit in and enjoy as well as a garden with raised beds for those who are able to potter in the garden.
A full range of activities helps to create a welcoming atmosphere and improve the quality of life for our clients. Our plan also includes an internet café and information source for the local community.
The aim is to support carers so that older people can be looked after at home for as long as possible.
WHY OUR APPEAL IS SO URGENT
- The number of people aged over 85 is expected to double by 2020
- 1 in 5 adults now care for an elderly relative with all too many putting their careers on hold to do so and many never enjoying a holiday
- In a survey of 2000 people caring for their parents, 540 had put their holidays on hold and 260 had taken career breaks
- The number of people with dementia will double to 1.4 million in the next 30 years
- In Wirral, there are at least 5,250 people suffering from dementia
- Two thirds of people with dementia are cared for in their own homes
THE PLAN
- To raise £1.5m by 2012
- To demolish the existing 100 year old building in 2012
- Start building a new day centre with open plan lounges, patios and landscaped gardens, new services, wheelchair access
- Provide a regular programme of activities and entertainment in modern, bright surroundings
