Dementia Unit

About our service:

The second floor of Southworth House is allocated to our residents who have a diagnosis of dementia in addition to nursing needs. A Registered Nurse or a Registered Mental Nurse is on duty on every shift, every day of the week. The unit has a rich skill mix of Healthcare Assistants trained to NVQ Level II and III who support the Registered Nurses.

Special features:

The unit is specially designed to meet the needs of the residents who stay at Hoylake Cottage

  • The décor is designed to produce a calm and relaxing atmosphere
  • Bedroom doors and en-suite doors are different colours to the walls to encourage the residents to enter these rooms.
  • The en-suite rooms have vibrant red toilet seat, to encourage use of the toilet; and safety taps to prevent flooding.
  • Memory boxes filled with items to prompt memory recall are fixed to the wall outside each resident’s room.
  • A variety of music is available
  • Information about the residents’ lives before they came to stay at Hoylake Cottage is mounted on the wall of each resident’s room, to help staff get to know them.
  • Doors to rooms such as the utility room are painted the same colour as the wall to detract residents from entering. These doors also remain locked at all times.
  • Activities are conducted with individuals and in small group sessions and residents are encouraged to mix with the nursing residents for entertainment
  • Special signage helps the residents to identify the function of each room
  • The residents benefit from the same high standard of accommodation and service as offered on the nursing unit.
