A resident who moved into Southworth House when it opened in July 2008, is John Cooper. His wife Norah Cooper said: “It is a nice place, bright, spacious and very welcoming. As soon as I walk in I don’t have to worry about which member of staff I should talk to – everyone smiles and says hello, the staff are lovely.
“It is open and bright and the residents can move around without restrictions, but it is a safe environment.
“The other week we went onto the lower floor to listen to a pianist who came in to entertain residents. He played the intro to a song and before I could say anything, John said ‘That’s ‘The road to Mandalay’” and smiled. He is smiling a lot at the moment – and that makes me happy.
Resident Irene Snape, 77, moved in after a spell at St Catherine’s Hospital. Her husband Peter visited 12 care homes before choosing Hoylake Cottage.
“The facilities here are excellent; it is purpose built, it is fresh and bright and the whole atmosphere is cheerful and welcoming,” said Peter.
“The staff are very good and I can only describe it as five star, quality care.”
One in five people cares for an older relative, and many of these carers are also likely to be in poor health.
